A Culturally Relevant Believer

Today we see the Christian community being placed under greater scrutiny and attack. For the most part it is a sign that we are failing as a belief system to remain relevant in our culture. While there are certain aspects of our culture that are in diametric opposition to what Christianity represents there are other aspects that we cannot afford to toss into the wind.

Paul so eloquently portrays what the Christian life is all about in I Corinthians 9:18-23 from the English Standard Version: “What then is my reward? That in my preaching I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel. For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings”.

The effective Christian is one that can relate people on their level and using their language…The single greatest asset we have in our walk is our testimony. There is no greater message to tell others about God than the mess He has delivered us through in our own encounter with Jesus, His Word, and His directive in our lives.

The people that are in our lives daily really do not care how much we know or how smart we are…Until they know how much we care! And even then if it is not seasoned with love, bathed in compassion, and sealed in mercy there will be nothing gained in our outreach…Let the scoffer scoff and the sneering, sneer but never be found in a position of loss in that the Spirit of God is not working through us to demonstrate the genuiness of the life changing work that has and continues to take place in our lives!
